Fuse Board Upgrades in Wigan and the North West

Upgrading an outdated fuse board is one of the most common jobs I carry out, and one of the most worthwhile. A modern consumer unit with RCD protection is significantly safer than an old-style fuse board and brings your installation in line with current regulations. I carry out all upgrades to BS 7671 and issue full certification on completion.

Old Fuse Boards vs Modern Consumer Units

Older fuse boards use rewirable fuses or early MCBs without RCD protection. Modern consumer units use Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) that provide significantly better protection against electric shock and electrical fires. An RCD can detect a fault and cut the power in as little as 30 milliseconds, potentially saving lives.

Signs Your Fuse Board Needs Upgrading

Consider upgrading your fuse board if:

  • It contains old-style rewirable fuses
  • It does not have RCD protection
  • Circuit breakers trip frequently
  • You are adding new circuits such as an EV charger or electric shower
  • Your EICR has recommended an upgrade
  • The board is visibly damaged or discoloured
  • You are selling your property and want to maximise its appeal

The Upgrade Process

A fuse board upgrade typically takes 4-8 hours for a standard domestic property. I isolate the power, remove the old board, install the new consumer unit, connect all circuits, test the installation thoroughly, and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate on completion. Since 2016, all new consumer unit installations must use metal-clad units to comply with Amendment 3 of BS 7671.

Cost and Value

A fuse board upgrade is one of the most cost-effective electrical improvements you can make to your property. It improves safety, may reduce your insurance premium, and adds value when selling. The cost of a standard domestic upgrade typically ranges from £350 to £600 depending on the size of the installation.

Safety & Compliance

Fuse board upgrades comply with BS 7671 (18th Edition) including Amendment 3 requirements for metal-clad consumer units. All work is self-certified under Part P.
